Do you have a problem of choosing the color for your coffee table?

Don’t fret. Here are some tips to help you choose the color of your coffee table.

1. Ask yourself who you are

Choosing a coffee table is like making a decision on how to decorate your room. You must define what kind of a person are you.

What is your personality? Are you are homely type of person?

Or are you a mysterious, bashful person?

What kind of feeling do you want your coffee table to have?

After you have determine your goal, its time to move on to the next step.

2. Choose a color that you want your coffee table to feel.

Do not be shy. Choose a BOLD color if you are a daring and attention seeking individual. Something like Bright Yellow. But be careful not to overdo it.

If you are looking for something that’s more peaceful, use light colors. White would be fine.

3. Use a combination of colors

For a very warm and homely feeling, you can pair your coffee table with warm colors like brown, yellow, red or orange.

For example, you can choose a brown coffee table to match your yellow leather sofa.

Do consider a sharp contrast in colors too. Like red and white, black and white. This will give a very sharp contrast in the living room.

4. If you are using table cloth, choose the fabric before you choose your color for your coffee table.

If you intend to add a table cloth or something to your coffee table, do ensure that you choose your cloth before you choose your table.

The texture of your table cloth must go hand in hand with the color of your coffee table.

Get a sample or something. Do not rush into the purchase.

5. Mix them

If you have enough space in your living room, try to buy different but matching coffee tables and have fun.

Place them all around your living room.

You never know what kind of results you will be getting. Very often a mixture will bring out the best of two worlds.

How to Make Your Coffee Table Work for You

Sunday, March 16th, 2008

There many pieces of furniture in your living room. Your sofa, chairs, wall fan and your lamps etc.

Not many people place emphasize on the coffee table. In fact, it is often the “last” piece of furniture in consideration. Do you often curse your coffee table?

Often, finding the correct coffee table is like playing HALO with your niece/nephew. How do we actually determine the height, size and shape of the coffee table?

Finding a table you like that fits into the room and your game plan for the room can be a significant challenge. How do you know what size, height and shape?

I read the article by
Chicago Interior Designer Mitchell Putlack.

Actually here as the main points in the article summarized by the Coffee Table Aficionado.

1. Harnessing The Power of Two or More

If you get 2 men to exchange 2 $1 coin each, they will walk away with $1 each. However, if you get 2 men to exchange an idea each, they each walk away with 2 ideas.

Very often, you can use two smaller coffee tables instead of just one.

2. A Goal in Mind

How are you going to use your coffee table?

If you are going to use your coffee table as a leg raise, consider something like an ottoman-styled coffee table(aff). Make sure that the height of your seat is just nice so that you feel comfortable. For holding drinks, you can use a simple tray to hold them.

If you are like me, who loves to slot my legs inside the tables(including dining tables), consider getting something has a slot for you to put your legs.

In other words, get something by focusing on the purpose.

3. Who is going to use it?

Who is going to use the table? The user is the important element in deciding the purchase too.

You might want to get something for the little one at home(he might become the next Picasso!).

4. The 18-inch Rule

Chicago Interior Designer Mitchell Putlack recommends that you should only place the coffee table at a 18 inches away from the soft or anything else. He says “anything beyond that creates distance between the table and the user on the sofa.”

He goes on to say that, by applying this rule, your shape of coffee table can be decided.

If the space left is small, you can use a tiny round coffee table. Putlack also mentions that, “The relationship between the edge of the sofa and the edge of a round table exists at only one point,” Anything that is beyond that, the point starts getting further and further away.

When that happens, you can choose to just pull your coffee table towards your sofa.

You could consider a square coffee table when you already have a section of a sofa that is parallel to towards each other. Just adding the square coffee table (aff) ensures you have the 18 inch distance from all angles.

5. X, Y and Z.

Consider all three dimensions of the coffee table.

Everyone should be able to sit down and reach the coffee table(aff) without much stretching or even getting up their seats.

The designer mentions about not forgetting the 18 inch rule.

Be flexible.

Life’s much simpler that way. Don’t you think so?

Hope you find this useful. If you do, please subscribe to my RSS feed or drop me an email to give me any suggestions. Thanks!

How To Prepare Your Living Room for Your Coffee Table

Sunday, March 9th, 2008

Do you have problems integrating your living room with your coffee table? Here are some useful tips to get you start!

1. Before you start with your integration, take a snapshot of your living room. Take a look around it. Try to identify the goods and bads of your living room.

There are many things you would want to take note of. I think for a living room, lighting is a very important thing.

The lighting will directly affect your coffee table. So pay attention to the window.

Another factor you should consider is proportions. In photography, there is the rule of one thirds. We can always apply that in your living room.

Consider the free space of your living room to be 2/3 of the total size of the living room.

Remember, the amount of power of SPACE.

So do not buy a coffee table that is too large for your living room.

2. Exterminate any major flaws you find in your living room.

The next step to take is to become an “flawbuster

Basically, there are two approach to this tactic. If your flaw is something structural, and if you have the budget, go ahead and tear your wall down. Revamp the whole living room. Redefine your space.

On the other hand, there is an easier approach to take. You can always consider using other “weapons” to eliminate the flaws.

You can use paint or even accessories to get rid of those flaws. If there are flaws in your flooring, go do something about it. Time to get a new flooring?

3. If you cant get rid of those flaws, try your very best to hide/disguise them.

“When you can’t beat them, you hide them.” There is one thing to note here. Before attempting to hide the flaws, you must make sure you have attempted to fix it first.

Otherwise, you will just be making things worse.

If your living room is too small for your coffee table, do consider using a mirror to “create space”.

For minor imperfections, you can use weapons like paint. This will diminish the effect of the flaw and also in a way help to disguise it.

4. Highlight The Best Feature in Your Living Room.(Promote it)

If something is good. Why hide it? Instead, you should publicize it.

If your windows are beauitful, if your sofa is awesome, even if your walls are brilliant in their very simple way, go all out and SHOW IT.

This works just like the way you dress yourself. YOU always promote your best feature right?

So If you are lanky, wear something that’s bright(try white). On the other hand, if you are not so slim, i guess you always wear dark color(like black). If you are short, you dont wear baggy pants right?

Remember to emphasize on the best features but PLAY DOWN the less attractive ones.

Conclusion

After you have followed this 4 steps, you can then proceed to buy your coffee table. Try it and tell me the results!

Saturday, March 1st, 2008

Why am I writing this post with such a contradicting title? You may wonder why. Take a look at the picture on top. Try climbing it.

Think about this. The purpose of my blog, is to help you and provide you with advice right? But looks like I have just confused you. Let me tell you why.

Why Buying A Coffee Table is Definitely NOT Easy

Think of it like this first, in the first place, WHY do you actually need a coffee table? Is it because your living room is too empty? or is it simply because you just want to spend your cash?

I guess you probably wouldnt know what are the answers to the questions above. Most people go shopping, buying what they like.(Especially for women?!)

In the world that live in, manufacturers are constantly trying to create highly customizable options for consumers like us. Some people like it, I wonder what about you? The reason why it is not easy is BECAUSE you do not know what coffee table you want exactly.

How To Make Buying A Coffee Table Easy(Without Breaking a Hole in Your Wallet)

Actually, what I am providing here applies to everything. You can apply it for your life as well. I hope it would be valuable to you.

  • 1. Go shopping with a Goal - Please do not go to the furniture shop and start looking around. Time is the most important currency in this world. Think of what you really want before hand. Research online, go to coffeetablezone.com
  • 2. Do Not Bring Extra money - Bring together with you a budget. No more no less. (Do not bring a credit card.)
  • 3. Go Home After Shopping - Please DO NOT hang out around the shopping centre. Please do not have a meal at the shopping centre. Times are bad. Inflation is high.
  • P.S. Before commencing on all the steps, Please read this blog post for 21 TIMES to get it printed inside your head.

The Bottomline

Well, I guess you would have known by now. The point I am trying to make is IF You think of the why, then Buying A Coffee Table would then be a piece of cake. Hope you like this post. If you do like it, please subscribe via email or RSS feeds. Thanks a lot.
